What Is Wellness? A Holistic Approach to Health and Well-Being

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself, what does wellness really mean? While the term "wellness" is commonly used in today’s world, its true meaning often goes deeper than just physical health. So, what does it mean to be well?

According to a quick Google search, wellness is defined as “the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.” This definition highlights that wellness isn’t just about being healthy—it's about making intentional choices to achieve a balanced and fulfilling life.

But is wellness only about physical health? Absolutely not.

The Dimensions of Wellness

The concept of holistic wellness goes far beyond physical fitness. In 1976, the idea of the Wellness Wheel was introduced to help individuals explore multiple dimensions of well-being. Originally, the Wellness Wheel included:

  • Physical Wellness

  • Emotional Wellness

  • Intellectual Wellness

  • Spiritual Wellness

  • Social Wellness

  • Occupational Wellness

Today, this model has expanded to include Financial Wellness and Environmental Wellness, offering a more complete picture of what it means to live well in a modern world.
